We aim to provide, supervise and manage a workshop space where people can work on individual and collective projects, in a safe environment, with access to tools and machinery, with the objective of fostering cooperation and mutual assistance.
Associate membership is available to the general population locally, to anyone age 16+.
We will facilitate training courses and group projects, to provide opportunities for skill sharing, and skill preservation.
Part of a wider movement of “Men’s Sheds”, our objective is to promote camaraderie and social engagement, with an emphasis on providing older people with opportunities to engage socially and creatively, and to continue to be active participants of their community.
We are open to people of all genders.
CreativityToday, we are less in awe of the creative process. Now, creativity is recognised as a practical skill, one which can be taught and which everyone can achieve.
CommunitySelf-organized network of people with common agenda, cause, or interest, who collaborate by sharing ideas, information, and other resources.
ProjectsA project is a unique, transient endeavour, undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of outputs, outcomes or benefits.

The Men’s Shed Movement
The Men’s Shed movement began in Australia during the 1990s in response to increasing concern in depression and stress related illness in elderly men following their retirement. The Shed initiative focused on men because in Australia women already had access to community organisations.
The loss of social interaction in occupational environments was considered to be a contributing factor. The Shed concept was therefore initially aimed at providing a replacement, stress free working environment through meaningful activity and social interaction. Activities were of the kind typically undertaken by men in their garden sheds such as DIY, wood working and other forms of craftwork.
It has since grown throughout the world and today in the UK, 150 Sheds are operating with over 3000 members.
What is a Shed?
A ‘Shed’ is typically a place where members of a community come together to socialise, learn new skills and pursue individual and group projects.
A Shed offers a safe and relaxing environment in which members can learn from each other by:
- sharing knowledge, skills and experience
- using shared tools, resources and equipment
- undertaking projects on an individual, group or community basis.
The Lewes Shed
Our objective is to provide a typical ‘Shed’ environment for individuals based in and around Lewes. It is our intention that the Shed will reflect the unique character of the town and the inclusive spirit of its community. The Lewes Shed is therefore organised and run by volunteer members, and open to all-comers, regardless of gender, age or background.
A core aim is to promote camaraderie through a shared and socially engaging environment. Overall, we want it to be a place where members can relax and have fun through creative and worthwhile projects.
We are in the early stages in our development and are actively seeking appropriate premises, local sponsorship, contributions and new members.
Our first projects are primarily aimed at:
- formalising the charity and organisation
- locating and establishing appropriate premises
- achieving funding and sponsorship
- engaging new members
- developing a community resource base.
We are keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help us with any of these projects.
Lewes Raft Race Project
Lewes Shed is entering a team in the July raft race to promote, gain support and donations from the community for the Shed initiative. We would like to hear from anyone interested in joining the team or wishing to contribute in any way, such as building the raft or participating in the event.
